It's a Girl!

Peter and Bronny are overjoyed to announce the arrival of their latest family member! Aurora Sietske van Vugt was born at 10:30am on Thursday, October 11th. (Six days early!) She was 20.5 inches long and weighed 7lbs 12ounces. Aurora is the name of a town in Ontario where Bronny's great grandmother lived for several decades, where her grandfather was raised (and still lives), and her mom and mom's sisters were raised. This great grandmother (Aurora's great-great grandmother) passed away within a week of Aurora's conception. Aurora is the first of her generation on Bronny's side of the family, and the name was chosen to pay tribute to the generations of past and present. Sietske (pronounced "Seet-ske") is Peter's mom's given name. The name is Dutch and was chosen both to honour Peter's mom as well as to honour Peter's Dutch heritage passed on from both his mom and his dad.

Aurora's coming into this world did not go as smoothly as one might have hoped, however both mom and baby are healthy and happy. Bronny went into labour on Tuesday evening. The labour was intense from the get go and continued for a brutal 36 hours without much progress. The baby was not positioned properly and was unable to engage, or drop, hence Bronny was unable to dilate. The situation progressed into a condition called "Bandl's ring" or "pathological retraction ring", where the contractions are squeezing the baby in place, but not pushing the baby down. The condition eventually leads to the rupturing of the uterus. Luckily, the obstetrician identified the problem and called for an emergency cesarean. The operation was successful and there was no harm to mom or baby. Peter and Bronny are very thankful for the way things turned out. Aurora is currently sleeping and feeding well. She has surpassed her birth weight, and Bronny is regaining her strength day by day. Mom and Dad are proud as can be and have very much enjoyed their first week of parenthood. Check back soon for more pictures in our photo album. There's lots!! Thanks to all of you for your love and support!
